Will Downing Returns to the Stage After Illness

The jazz-influenced singer, who is known for his sultry baritone, was placed on medical rest last month and forced to cancel his remaining tour dates. Fortunately, for his many fans, that restriction has been lifted, and Downing will return to touring in 2011 in support of his latest project “Lust, Love and Lies.”

In 2006, Downing was diagnosed with polymyositis, a muscle disorder that left him bedridden and without his voice at one point. Downing was able to recover both his mobility and his voice, even though it’s now much more challenging for him to record.

"I'm alive!” Downing says. “Taking it one day at a time, hoping to make up any missed dates in the near future and looking forward to seeing my fans.”

Will Downing (Wilfred Downing, November 29, 1963, Brooklyn, New York), is an American singer-songwriter and producer. Downing is known in the contemporary jazz and R&B music genres for his rich baritone vocals and his interpretations of R&B and pop classics that stretch back to the early 1980s.

Downing enrolled in Klein High School in Houston, Texas. The high school had one of the strongest performing arts programs in the city. Record company executives Clive Davis, who founded Arista Records, and Kedar Massenburg, who later became president of Motown Records. Downing, who eventually recorded for Motown, graduated with Massenburg in the class of 1981. Downing then attended college at Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia. In the mid-1980s he moved back to New York City worked on albums by Jennifer Holiday, Kool & the Gang, sax maestro Gerald Albright, Billy Ocean, Regina Belle, Mica Paris and others. Later he sang with Arthur Baker's group, Wally 'Jump' Junior. Downing then used Baker as a producer after he signed with Island Records.

In 1988 Downing signed a recording contract with 4th & Broadway Records, and his first solo album, Will Downing, was released that same year. The critics singled out Downing's version of the John Coltrane classic jazz piece A Love Supreme as one of its highlights. It reached No. 4 on the Billboard Charts.Downing stayed with 4th & Broadway for just one album and switched to Island Records for his second release, Come Together As One, in 1989. Like his first album, Come Together As One was a pop- and dance-oriented collection of R&B songs that also reflected Downing's love of jazz.

Will is married to singer Audrey Wheeler, who has collaborated with various singers as a back-up singer.

In 2002 he received the International Association of African-American Music Diamond Award.

Adams was born the daughter of a preacher and was raised with gospel music. In her youth her family moved to Yakima, Washington, which is sometimes shown as her place of birth.

Before gaining her opportunity to perform, Adams faced a great deal of rejection. In the 1970s, she moved to Los Angeles, California where she recorded a demo tape. However, many music executives were exclusively interested in disco music rather than Adams' preferred style.

With the advice of her singing coach, Lee Farrell, Adams moved to Kansas City where she did a variety of local gigs. Adams started her career in the early 1980s with two self-financed albums which had limited success.

In 1985, Adams was discovered by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, founders of the English band Tears for Fears, while performing in a hotel bar in Kansas City, Missouri whilst they were on a US tour. They chatted with Adams after her performance, and two years later they contacted her to invite her to join their band as a singer on their next album, The Seeds of Love.

In 1989, the album was released and the single "Woman In Chains" - sung as a duet by Adams and Orzabal and with Phil Collins on drums - became her first hit. Adams embarked on a world tour with Tears For Fears in 1990, performing by herself as the supporting artist at the start of each show, and remaining onstage throughout the Tears For Fears set where she would provide piano and vocals.

In 1994, Adams married drummer John Cushon at a United Methodist church in Kansas City, where they both teach Sunday School. They met in 1980 while working on a demo tape for Adams. Adams stated that she never had a passion to get married but on January 17, 1994 she and Cushon were involved in the LA earthquake. Adams referred to this as a sign from God that she was ready to get married

Moonwalking across stages telling people to ‘GET OFF THE WALL’, cause you were ‘BAD’, had us bumping to ‘ROCK WITH YOU’, because ‘THE WAY YOU MAKE ME FEEL’, wasn’t like a ‘SMOOTH CRIMINAL’ but I listened to you shout ‘DIRTY DIANA’ letting us know you were ’DANGEROUS’ a musical genius who many sampled, idolized, and imitated. You broke color lines and gave us ‘BLACK AND WHITE’, traveled the globe, loved by many you were definitely a ‘THRILLER’ telling us to ‘BEAT IT’, ‘ALL THE PRETTY YOUNG THANGS’ repeated after you cause ‘YOU ROCK MY WORLD’ had us tapping our feet, while we wondered if you ‘WANNA BE STARTIN SOMETHIN’ People were amazed by your talents while some were appalled during the news of your personal woes, but you proved you were ‘UNBREAKABLE’ and told them ‘LEAVE ME ALONE’ As Many of us heard the news it gave us ‘BUTTERFLIES’ because ‘THE MAN IN THE MIRROR’ is really gone, as you said ‘DON’T STOP TILL YOU GET ENOUGH’, and it was clear you were ready for more, planning a major tour.
